LOST Tech Article: Auburn Limited Slip Diff Install
|
7/24/05 |
|
|
"I went with the limited slip because of the amount of snow/ice that we get here in Denver and because my wife will drive this vehicle on occasion. You can’t “turn off” a Powertrax and the ARB lockers are way out of my budget. A high quality limited slip was the answer for us. I decided on the Auburn over the Trac-Lock because of the cone clutch that the Auburn uses. Basically it won’t wear out as fast as the plate clutch in the Trac-Lock, and the Auburn will transfer power even when traction is zero on one wheel! Those are two huge advantages over the factory limited slip." |

Step-by-step installation instructions, as well as an explanation of the pros and cons of the Powertrax No-Slip, and the differences between the No-Slip and the Lock Right.
"The Powertrax No-Slip, I am convinced, is the most bang-per-buck, least compromise, easiest installing, 100% locking differential unit available for four-wheelers today. I will be recommending this locker to my friends." |

Switching from the 3.73 to 4.10 gears after you lift and put bigger tires on can help restore the original acceleration and fuel economy.

This is the correct part number if you have an open differential (no LSD).

Update: Over 6 years and a bunch of tough trails later, the Powertrax is still performing flawlessly. It's awesome on the trail...but it does chew up tires. A selectable locker would be ideal, but way more expensive. So, only 4 1/2 stars. |

I've had this on for a few months now and offroad it's make a HUGE difference. I can easily get anywhere. Onroad you can tell it's there but it really isn't that noticeable. You do have to adjust your driving style, like don't floor it around corners :), but other than that it's great. No problems in rain, or snow yet either. For the price and the very easy install I am very happy with this locker. |

For the price, I don't think you can do better than the Powertrax No-slip. Installation in an open diff was a cinch and it's barely noticeable on road with my automatic tranny. Off-road it performs as well as a full time locker. I gave it 4.5 instead of 5 stars as every once in a while you will hear it clank on road but it's not a big deal. |

I've been running my Powertrax for about a week, and have only positive things to say about it. Behaves great on the road, even on wet pavement. I haven't tried it yet on ice or packed snow, but I don't mind driving a bit slower (and engaging 4WD occasionally) in exchange for the awesome offroad capability. |

This is the correct part number if you have a limited-slip differential. (I rate this lower than the open diff version, because several LOST members have reported that the LSD version is much more difficult to install than the one for open diffs...it may be worthwhile to look into an Auburn or Detroit LSD.)
